Burial Licenses — Holguín Municipal Court, 1941 to 1950
This page holds 1,715 burial licenses (licencias de enterramiento) issued by the Holguín Municipal Court, in the city of Holguín, in the old Oriente Province, for seven years between 1941 and 1950. A burial license is a court's permit to bury a person who has died. Each one is addressed to the keeper of the town's cemetery and names the person to be buried.
The licenses usually say more than the cemetery's burial books. They give where the person was from, their occupation, age, race, parents' names, and the time, place and cause of death.
All 1,715 licenses are transcribed and searchable on this page. Every record links to the scanned license; open a record and choose View source to see it as it was written (scans open with a free account). Each license was read from its scan by OCR and by independent readers, and what they could not settle was read by a vision model and checked against the owner's own readings; a reading that is still uncertain keeps its marks, (?) and [...]. The date of death on each record is worked out from the license date and its hoy (today) or ayer (yesterday), and says so. 906 licenses link to the same burial in the cemetery's books.
There are no licenses here for 1942, 1943 or 1944.
About the source
The licenses do not seem to cover every burial in the Holguín Municipal Cemetery in any of these years. Read them alongside the cemetery's own burial and exhumation books, which cover 1925 to 1979.
Acknowledgements
Our sincere thanks to the resident of Holguín who acquired these licenses from the Holguín Municipal Cemetery.
