Cuba’s oldest Jewish cemetery, established in 1910, is situated on land acquired by the United Hebrew Congregation of Cuba in 1906. Located in the municipality of Guanabacoa in the province of Havana, the cemetery comprises around 1600 graves. As of 2024, the Cuba Research Project’s database includes details on approximately 2112 individuals. Because the names in this database have been obtained from different sources, some entries have been duplicated. If you find any errors please use the “contact us” page to let us know.
This database has: 2,112 records as of March 8, 2024
Tips on Searching Database
- For the most part, names have been transcribed as they appeared in the source.
- Names and last names in this database may be spelled differently to what you are expecting. Inputting Abr into the First Name field will search for “Abraham”, “Abrahan”, “Habraham”. Similarly, inputting Elg into the Last name field will search for “Elgazi”, “Elgezi”, “Elgasi”. Keeping your search as broad as possible will yield more results. (We will correct names upon request by family members).
- Encasing your search terms in quotation marks ” ” will search exactly for that term. For example, inputting “Esquenazi” will only search for Esquenazi and not Esquenasi.
- You can leave a search field blank. For example, if you are searching for “Daniel Cohen” you can input Daniel in the first name field and leave the last name blank. In fact, we recommend you do this because Cohen may be spelled differently (e.g Coen) and searching for Daniel Cohen will not yield any results, but just searching for Daniel will.
- You can click on “Search” and leave all search fields blank and it will yield all names in this database. This will allow you to browse all names in this database.
About the Source
- Most of the names in this database were sourced from a book kept by the cemetery staff listing the individuals buried in this cemetery. Our eternal gratitude to Ken Paskar who provided a copy of this book to Cuba Research Project. (A1)
- Several names on this list were collected and documented by Susan “Sue” Gersten, a photographer, during a trip to Cuba in the early 2000s. Sue also captured images of headstones. Although her website, SueGersten.com, is no longer active, we retrieved this historical record from a 2005 archive with the assistance of Archive.org (Web Archive), containing the list and some photos. Despite our attempts to contact Ms. Gersten, we sadly discovered that she passed away on December 13, 2013. We express our eternal gratitude to Ms. Gersten for her valuable contribution. Note: Names with an asterisk (*) indicate instances where the transcriber likely faced challenges due to illegibility or damage to the headstone. To download the list as originally transcribed by Ms. Gersten, please click here. (A3)
- Names on this list were also gathered from a series of photos taken by Jono David at the cemetery and published on the “HaChayim HaYehudim Jewish Photo Library.” To view the album, click here. (A2)
- Certain names were obtained from “Find a Grave.” (A4)
- Additionally, some names were provided by family members or friends of individuals buried in this cemetery.
