Historia de Familias Cubanas: History of 841 Surnames in Cuba
The book “Historia de Familias Cubanas” is one of the most comprehensive genealogical works done in the Island of Cuba. It contains 841 surnames and their history. This voluminous book is 9 tomes and contains a treasure trove of information for any researcher. This work was carried out by Francisco Xavier de Santa Cruz y Mallén (Conde (Count) de San Juan de Jaruco) and contains genealogical information until the 20th century.
An index to the people named in the book is on this page: the search here
covers every person the Cuba Research Project read out of the nine tomos. The
book also carries its own index to the surnames, printed from page 2 on.

The index to this book
Every person named in the nine volumes is here, searchable, with the family
their entry states and a reference back to the page they were read from.
The book is a narrative genealogy rather than a register. One entry states a
person, who they married, and the children of that marriage in a single passage:
6—Don Luis de Cárdenas y Herrera, casó con doña María de los Dolores Calvo y
Herrera, hija de don Pedro Calvo y Herrera, y de doña María Ignacia Herrera y
Cárdenas. Tuvieron por hijos: a Elena; a Máximo; a Nicasio.
That passage names six people. Each has a record of their own, so anyone can be
found and followed in their own right and not only as a name inside someone
else's entry.
Each of the nine tomos restarts its page numbering at 1, so a page number alone
does not identify a page. Every record therefore cites the volume, the printed
page, and the page of the scanned file (for example Tomo 1, p. 58 · PDF 40)
and the scan is the one linked above, so any entry can be checked against it.
