List of Names From the United Hebrew Congregation Cemetery (Centro Macabeo Cemetery)
Cuba's oldest Jewish cemetery, established in 1910, sits on land the United Hebrew Congregation of Cuba acquired in 1906. It is in the municipality of Guanabacoa, in Havana province, and holds around 1,600 graves. As of 2024, the Cuba Research Project database includes details on about 2,112 individuals. Because the names come from several sources, some entries are duplicated. If you find any errors, use the "contact us" page to let us know.
Tips on searching the database
- For the most part, names have been transcribed as they appeared in the source.
- Names may be spelled differently from what you expect. Entering Abr in the First Name field will find "Abraham", "Abrahan", and "Habraham"; entering Elg in the Last Name field will find "Elgazi", "Elgezi", and "Elgasi". A broader search returns more results. (We will correct names on request by family members.)
- Putting search terms in quotation marks searches for that exact term. Entering "Esquenazi" returns only Esquenazi, not Esquenasi.
- You can leave a search field blank. If you are looking for "Daniel Cohen", enter Daniel in the first name field and leave the last name blank. We recommend this, because Cohen may be spelled differently (for example, Coen), so searching for the full name may return nothing while searching for Daniel alone will.
- Clicking "Search" with all fields blank returns every name in the database, letting you browse the full list.

- Most names come from a book kept by the cemetery staff listing those buried there. Ken Paskar provided a copy of this book to Cuba Research Project. (A1)
- Several names were collected by Susan "Sue" Gersten, a photographer, during a trip to Cuba in the early 2000s, who also photographed headstones. Her website, SueGersten.com, is no longer active, but we recovered the list and some photos from a 2005 capture on Archive.org. Ms. Gersten died on December 13, 2013. An asterisk (*) next to a name marks entries where the headstone was illegible or damaged. Download the list as she originally transcribed it. (A3)
