List of Names From the United Hebrew Congregation Cemetery (Centro Macabeo Cemetery)
The United Hebrew Congregation cemetery is in Guanabacoa, Havana. The congregation acquired the land in 1906, and the cemetery was established in 1910. This index brings together the cemetery staff's burial book, headstone photographs, JewishGen's burial list and other contributed lists.
When review shows that sources describe the same burial, the search results show one record. The displayed spelling generally follows the cemetery staff book supplied by Ken Paskar; the record page keeps the other source readings visible. A shared name alone is not enough to combine two burials, so uncertain matches remain separate.
How to use a record
- Search broadly. Try part of a given name or surname if the spelling is uncertain. For example, Abr can find Abraham, Abrahan, and Habraham. Leave fields blank when you are unsure of them.
- Check the source readings. Open a result to see its grave location and any alternate names from the other sources. Those spellings can help you recognize a person, but each source may contain errors.
- Compare the scan. Many records have a See in ledger link that opens the scanned page and marks the approximate line. The book usually puts the surname first; the search results put the given name first. The OCR reading is a finding aid, so verify the handwriting and burial details in the image.
Where the names come from
- Cemetery staff book, supplied by Ken Paskar. The principal burial list and the preferred spelling when a reviewed match connects multiple sources. Linked records can be compared with its scanned pages.
- Sue Gersten's list and headstone photographs. Gersten collected names during a trip to Cuba in the early 2000s. Her website is no longer active; the list and some photographs were recovered from a 2005 Archive.org capture. An asterisk in her original list indicates a damaged or illegible headstone. - Find a Grave. Memorial entries offer additional names and readings.
- Family members and friends. Some details were supplied by people connected to those buried here.
- JewishGen's burial list (CUBA-00347). JewishGen's Online Worldwide Burial Registry lists 1,522 burials here, compiled by volunteers. It was added in October 2026 as a further source. Where a JewishGen entry describes a burial already in this index, the existing record keeps its own values and shows what JewishGen adds, such as a birth date, a Hebrew name or a comment, credited to JewishGen. Where the two disagree, the record keeps its value, shows JewishGen's reading beside it and is marked for review. 1,187 entries were matched this way; 269 entries with no match are records of their own; 66 entries that could fit more than one record are held for review and not yet shown. The volunteers' death place, which they assumed from the cemetery's location, is not shown as a fact. JewishGen's headstone photographs are linked on JewishGen, not copied here.
