A database of 1,664 Cuban individuals who appear in the 1871, 1875, and 1879 censuses for the city of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.
The records in this database come from a much larger list transcribed by the blog "Genealogia Dominicana". Only individuals whose nationality was listed as "Cuban" were extracted for publication here.
Many Cubans were exiled to the Dominican Republic, and especially to Puerto Plata, during the Ten Years' War (1868 to 1878), often at the invitation of influential Dominicans. In this list, for example, a professor named Antonio Benitez was living in a property owned by Gregorio Luperon, Vice President and later 20th President of the Dominican Republic.
The 1871 census lists 197 people whose nationality is "Cuban." That figure rises to 1,167 in 1875, then falls to 300 in 1879, which suggests that many Cubans returned home after the war.
