1950-51 List of Students, Faculty, and Staff from “Instituto De Segunda Enseñanza de Güines” School
A committee formed in Güines in early 1937 to secure a high school for the town. Its members included local officials, business leaders, and religious groups, and they took the case to the Ministry of Education in Havana, backing it with radio and press campaigns. Dr. Alfredo Jacomino Lopez, a member of the national House of Representatives, worked with Dr. Rafael Zervigon Castellanos and Dr. Silvano Herrera Mora to win a budget allocation for the school in the 1937-1938 fiscal year. The school opened in November 1937 under principal Dr. Francisco A. Martell Valdes, with Dr. Aracelia Hernandez de Jacomino as secretary.
Leadership later passed to Dr. Jose A. Reyes Gonzalez as principal and Dr. Reinaldo Becerra Ortega as secretary. With more than 1,000 students enrolled, the school formed a "Pro High School Building" committee and pressed the Ministry of Education for a dedicated building, without success.
Dr. Enrique Lavernia Saumell then became principal, with Professor Ruben Morales Garriz as secretary, and continued the push for a building. Minister Jose M. Aleman told them that if they found the land, he would fund the construction. Fred James Chambless, an American living in Güines, owned the Reparto Chambless development and donated two blocks in its best location for the school. The building was inaugurated in 1948 on Maceo Street (formerly Reina Street).
Under Lavernia the school added laboratories and museums, a music band, and a school bus. It prepared students from Mayabeque and nearby towns for university, and many of Güines' professionals graduated from it.
