Death records of Cuban Prisoners at Ceuta Penal Colony

During the 1800s, the Spanish authorities used Ceuta as a place of exile and imprisonment for individuals considered threats to the Spanish colonial rule. Political prisoners, rebels, and dissidents were among those who were sent to the penal colony. Conditions in the colony were often harsh, and prisoners faced challenging circumstances, including isolation from their families, restricted freedoms and of course, death.

About the source

This list was graciously compiled by a Ceutan citizen named Emilio Barranco Cazalla  and provided to CubaGenWeb.  The inscriptions in this list encompass the period of 10 August 1869 to July 1909. It seems that Mr. Barranco sourced these records from the parish of Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios in Ceuta, Spain. The list has been translated into English by the Cuba Research Project. You can read the original spanish transcribed list from CubaGenWeb by clicking here.

The columns L(libro) V(verso) F(folio) and Numero(number) indicates the record location of the person in the parish register from the source.

See Mr. Barranco’s letter to CubaGenWeb here.

Also, since this list contains the first names of the mother and father of the deceased individual, it is possible to guess the last names of the same by following Spanish naming conventions (Firstname PaternalFirstLastName MaternalFirstLastName).  So for example, from the list above, we can take Jose Pantaleon Gonzalez whose father’s first name was Manuel and the mother’s Maria. Following the rule above we can assume the father to be Manuel Pantaleon and the mother Maria Gonzalez. This is not accurate 100% of the time for different reasons, but it is probably right more often than not.
