1920-1921 Burial Notices Published in Diario de La Marina from the Colon Cemetery

Database with over 18,000 names from burial notices published in the newspaper Diario de La Marina from the Colon Cemetery in Havana, collected by Lydia E. Reyes.

This database has: 18050 records as of Feb 24, 2024

About the Source

The entries in this database originate from “Diario de la Marina,” Cuba’s longest-running newspaper. The names were exclusively gathered from burial announcements akin to those depicted in the attached image. Typically, these announcements provided details such as the deceased person’s name, age, place of death, burial plot, where the deceased was originally from, and more. The compilation exclusively encompasses names published during the years 1920-1921, specifically from the Colon Cemetery in Havana. It’s noteworthy that despite the author’s commendable effort in undertaking the monumental task of transcribing over 18,000 names, there’s a possibility that some names might have been inadvertently omitted.

This database of names provides the exact date of publication when the burial notice was posted on the newspaper. It also provides which edition (M = Mañana and T = Tarde). You can use the links below to check the burial notice on the newspaper itself.

You can access digitized versions of the Diario de La Marina here in these following links:

1884 – 1940

1840s – 1960s
